Postpartum Tonic産後補藥

Tailored consultation for a body and daily life changed by childbirth

A postpartum tonic that looks after
recovery in body and mind

A body changed by pregnancy and birth, and the fatigue that builds up once childcare begins. We check how the birth went, your current symptoms and whether you are breastfeeding, and advise on the recovery care you need.

Pre- and postnatal adviceBreastfeeding checkRecovery · weight care

When to see a doctor firstIf bleeding suddenly increases or you feel faint, or you have chest pain or shortness of breath, pain and swelling in one leg, or abdominal pain with fever, prompt care at a medical facility takes priority over a tonic consultation.

  • CASE 02Heavy, swollen feelingWhen swelling and weight are a concern
  • CASE 03Back and joint discomfortWhen breastfeeding and childcare postures take a toll

After childbirth,
are you noticing changes like these?

  • 01Easily exhausted
  • 02Not enough sleep
  • 03Heavy, swollen feeling
  • 04Back and joint discomfort
  • 05Lochia and lower abdominal pain
  • 06Worries about weight
  • 07Can I take herbal medicine while breastfeeding?
  • 08I feel low and find it hard to fall asleep

Even similar symptoms can differ in cause and pace of recovery.
We look at when you gave birth and how severe the symptoms are.

The first 100 days after birth —
following the course of recovery

After childbirth you may go through many changes, including changes in the uterus and abdomen, lochia, sleep and fatigue. Keep an eye on how your body feels and adjust rest, nutrition and your plans for returning to daily life. The 100 days are a guide for reviewing recovery, not a point by which all recovery is complete.

  1. STEP 01Right after birth — checking bleeding, pain and overall condition

We look at how you are doing after the birth, the pattern of lochia, pain and any surgical wound, and make sure you rest well.

  2. STEP 02Early recovery — checking meals, sleep, fatigue and discomfort

With breastfeeding and childcare in mind, attend to nutrition and rest, and check areas of discomfort such as the back and joints.

  3. STEP 03Adjusting to daily life — activity and weight-management plans

Increase activity in line with how your body feels, and plan sustainable lifestyle care rather than excessive weight loss.

NOTEChanges in the bodyRecovery and its length vary from person to person

The uterus goes through a gradual process of recovery after birth.

Lochia — vaginal bleeding and discharge after birth — can continue for several weeks, changing in amount and colour.

Lower abdominal pain similar to period pain may be felt as the uterus contracts during breastfeeding.

Back and joints need to be looked at together with changes during pregnancy, the birth itself, breastfeeding posture and the strain of childcare.

Alongside the number on the scale,
look at how you are recovering

Feeling heavy after childbirth is not explained by body fat alone. We check your current state as a whole, including swelling, meals, sleep and activity.

A postpartum tonic consultation is a process of checking your condition.
Taking it does not guarantee weight loss or reduced swelling.

Beyond a single symptom,
we look at your postpartum health as a whole

Rather than promising results, we first go over what the consultation will look at.

Whether a postpartum tonic is prescribed, and the plan for taking it, are decided in an individual consultation.
Responses and the length of time needed vary from person to person.

  1. 01Recovery since birth

We check the timing and type of birth, changes in lochia and pain, and the results of postnatal check-ups.

  2. 02Fatigue and eating

We look at low energy, how much you eat, nutrition and the conditions you have for rest.

  3. 03Back and joint discomfort

We check where it hurts, the pattern of pain, and breastfeeding and childcare postures.

  4. 04Swelling and weight change

We look at where and how you swell, changes in weight and your daily patterns to set a direction for care.

  5. 05Sleep and mood

We check lack of sleep, stress and changes in mood, and point you to any help you may need.

Prescription advice that differs
before and after birth

Here are five formulas considered in pre- and postnatal consultations. Prescriptions before and after birth serve different purposes, and the same formulas are not used in sequence for every mother. Whether, when and for how long to take them is decided after a consultation.

BEFORE BIRTHPrenatal consultation

  1. Dalsaeng-san達生散
    Before birth · 01

A formula introduced when considering the condition of a mother approaching birth. We consult after checking the course of the pregnancy, obstetric care and any medication currently taken.

  2. Nokyong Bulsu-san鹿茸佛手散
    Before birth · 02

One of the formulas introduced in prenatal consultations. We do not decide on it based on the due date alone, and first check the condition of mother and baby.

Dalsaeng-san and Nokyong Bulsu-san are formulas introduced in the period before birth. We do not decide on them based on the due date alone, and also check obstetric care and current medication.

AFTER BIRTHPostnatal consultation

  1. Saenghwa-tang生化湯
    After birth · 03

A formula traditionally introduced in connection with early postpartum recovery. We check lochia, bleeding, the pattern of pain and the course of the birth to judge whether it is suitable.

  2. Boheo-tang補虛湯
    After birth · 04

A formula traditionally used with postpartum weakness and deficiency of qi and blood in mind. We look at fatigue, eating and other factors before discussing whether to take it.

  3. Gunggwi Johyeol-eum芎歸調血飮
    After birth · 05

A formula introduced in connection with postpartum recovery. We consult while also considering postpartum discomfort and whether you are breastfeeding.

Saenghwa-tang, Boheo-tang and Gunggwi Johyeol-eum are formulas introduced in connection with postpartum recovery. We check the course of the birth, the pattern of lochia and pain, and whether you are breastfeeding to judge suitability.

Prescriptions may differ according to individual condition. At your consultation, please tell us whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, about any existing conditions, and about the medicines and health supplements you take.

The content of this page is provided to explain the composition and scope of use of Korean medicine formulas. Results may differ depending on individual symptoms and constitution, and no specific effect is guaranteed. Please be sure to consult a Korean medicine doctor before taking any formula, and tell us about every medication you are currently taking.

QWhen should I start taking a postpartum tonic?

This is decided after checking how the birth went, your current symptoms and any medication you take. The same formula or timing does not apply to every mother right after birth.

QCan I take it while breastfeeding?

While breastfeeding, the herbs and dosage of each formula and the condition of both mother and baby need to be checked. Not every herbal medicine can be assumed to be safe during breastfeeding, so please tell us whether you are breastfeeding and whether your baby was born prematurely or has jaundice.

QHow long should I take it?

It depends on the purpose of the prescription, your condition and how you progress after taking it. The same duration is not applied to every mother.

QCan I also get advice on swelling or weight?

Yes. We check the pattern of swelling and weight change and consider recovery and nutrition together. We do not guarantee a set amount of weight loss or reduced swelling from herbal medicine alone.

QCan I take it with other medicines?

Please tell us about everything you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and supplements. Whether they can be used together needs to be checked, and please do not stop your existing prescription medicine on your own.

QAre prescriptions during pregnancy and after birth the same?

Your condition and the purpose of the prescription differ before and after birth, so we consult on them separately. Please do not choose any formula introduced on this page yourself or take them in sequence.

QCan I talk about postpartum low mood or sleep problems too?

Please mention them at your consultation. If low mood persists or affects your daily life, you should get the help you need, such as mental health care. Herbal medicine does not replace assessment and treatment for postpartum depression.

Seek care right away for these symptomsIf bleeding suddenly increases or you feel faint, or you have chest pain or shortness of breath, pain and swelling in one leg, or abdominal pain with fever, prompt care at a medical facility takes priority over a tonic consultation.
